Serving the people of Beoley, Church Hill and Abbey Park

Funerals

With you every step of the way

If someone you love has died, a Church of England funeral can be held at St Leonard’s Church, in the churchyard, at a graveside, or at a crematorium. Our minister will support you throughout the whole process.

You don’t need to be religious or a regular churchgoer to have a Church of England funeral — everyone is welcome.

Planning the service

Our minister will help you plan the service. We understand it’s a hard time and decisions about music, readings, hymns, and tributes can feel overwhelming. We will guide you step-by-step, helping you create a service that truly honours the person you are remembering.

Hope

Christians believe that when we die, God promises a new life where there is no more pain or sadness. This hope can bring comfort to everyone at the funeral.

Even though we can’t see our loved one anymore, Christians trust that through Jesus’ death and resurrection, we will be reunited with them one day. This message of hope is at the heart of every Church of England funeral.

Ongoing support

No matter where you live or where the funeral takes place, St Leonard’s Church is here for you afterwards — whether the funeral was last week or many years ago.

  • A place to be: Sometimes after a funeral, you just need a quiet space to sit and think. Our church is a peaceful place open for you whenever you need it.

  • A place to pray: You’re welcome to light a candle, write a prayer, or just pause for a moment to share your feelings with God.

  • A place to talk: Funerals can bring up big questions about life and loss. Our vicar or minister is here to listen and help you find peace. If you want to talk, please contact us.

  • A place to go: Every Sunday and sometimes during the week, we gather to worship, pray, and support one another. You’re always welcome to join us, find friendship, and experience God’s comfort.

We also run The Friendship Group, which meets on the last Tuesday of each month at 10am in The Tapestry Room, offering a warm, supportive space for anyone who needs it.

First steps in arranging a funeral

  1. Register the death and meet a Funeral Director.

  2. The Funeral Director will contact the church to arrange a date and time for the funeral.

  3. Once arranged, the minister will get in touch with the family to visit, listen to stories about your loved one, and discuss the funeral service details.

If you need to contact us at any point, please do — we are here to support you.
